Mission
Statement
IMAGES is an artcinema which aims to show quality movies within a wide
range between avantgarde and mainstream. We want to fulfill this purpose
by showing Dutch premieres every week and repertoire cinema in special
screenings, if possible connected to other cultural events within The
Netherlands or within the regions of the Northern Netherlands, and especially
in the city of Groningen and its direct environment.
Welcome
Artcinema IMAGES is located in the old medieval city center of
Groningen, one of the oldest university towns in The Netherlands. You
will find IMAGES on the northern end of the Poelestraat which begins in
the south-eastern corner of the Grote Markt, the main square.
The city of Groningen has a population of approximately 175,000 and the
total service area of IMAGES covers the three northern provinces of The
Netherlands, with about 1.4 million inhabitants. For a visit to a comparable
artcinema you will have to travel to either Amsterdam, Utrecht or Nijmegen
within The Netherlands or to Oldenburg or Bremen in Germany, at least
150 kms away.
Apart from the weekly programme consisting mainly of Dutch arthouse premieres
and repertoire cinema, IMAGES is affiliated to the International Film
Festival Rotterdam and organizes every year a pocket edition of this prestigious
festival. IMAGES is also co-organizer of the yearly French film festival
CINE PREMIERES and participates in the annual masterclass "film criticism"
with the Faculty of Humanities of Groningen State University. Furthermore
IMAGES participates in a European circuit for documentaries called CINEMANET
EUROPE. IMAGES is currently developing a new film festival under the banner
"Metropolitan Images".
Facilities
IMAGES is established in an old mansion house which dates back to the
14th century. In 2001-2002 the building and the cinemas were totally renovated.
There are three cinemas with 190, 130 and 70 seats. All cinemas are equipped
with airco, dolby-sr sound system and 35mm projection. The largest cinema
is also equipped with an excellent video-beam for digital projection.
Apart from the Cafe des Images, situated on two floors, the building also
contains the so-called Kapteynzaal, a conference room which has been characteristically
restored back to its early 20th century decoration. It is possible to
rent IMAGES or parts of the building for small congresses, powerpoint
presentations, parties or meetings.
Questions in the English language sent to our e-mail address regarding
the programme will be duly answered.
